How Much Are You Paying for Electricity in Iowa?

Did you know that electricity rates in Iowa vary significantly depending on your provider? In fact, some Iowans are paying more than twice as much per kilowatt-hour as their neighbors in other parts of the state. With rising energy costs, understanding your utility rates, and how to take control of them is more important than ever.

Alliant vs. MidAmerican: A Stark Difference in Rates

Iowa is served by 181 electric providers, but over 72% of Iowans receive power from one of the two largest investor-owned utilities: MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy. A recent report by the CEDI highlights the sharp contrast in pricing between these two providers:

  • Alliant Energy customers paid 62.4% higher rates than MidAmerican Energy customers in 2023.

  • The average MidAmerican residential customer pays $10.99 per kWh, while Alliant customers pay $17.86 per kWh one of the highest rates in the state.

  • On average, an Alliant Energy customer paid over $600 more per year compared to a MidAmerican customer.

To put it into perspective, Alliant's rates are among the highest of all 181 electric providers in Iowa, surpassing nearly every rural electric cooperative and municipal utility in the state.

Iowa’s Electric Rates vs. the Rest of the U.S.

While Iowa’s statewide average electricity rate of $13.31 per kWh is below the national average of $16.00 per kWh, Alliant customers are paying 12% above the national average, comparable to high-cost states like California and Hawaii. Meanwhile, MidAmerican customers are benefiting from rates that are 31% lower than the national average.

What Can Iowans Do About Rising Electricity Costs?

Unlike some states where consumers can choose their energy provider, Iowa residents are stuck with their assigned utility company. Rate hikes are approved by the Iowa Utilities Commission, and prices have risen significantly over the past five years. Since 2019, U.S. residential electricity costs have increased by 30%, compared to just a 3% increase in the previous five years.

However, there are still ways to take control of your energy costs:

✅ Reduce electricity consumption

✅ You can move

✅ Go solar and generate your own power

✅ Advocate for fair rates with the Iowa Utilities Commission and your local representatives

Why Alliant Customers Are Turning to Solar

Homeowners in areas with high electricity rates save the most by switching to solar energy. In California, where rates are nearly double the national average, solar has become the dominant energy source, powering over 15 million homes.

Here in Iowa, solar adoption is growing rapidly, with installations expected to increase by 134% over the next five years. For homeowners in Alliant Energy territories, solar offers immediate and long-term savings, helping to offset high utility costs.
